The Special Talent Exchange Program (STEP), in collaboration with UNHCR Pakistan, ADDTF Pakistan, and Humanity and Inclusion (HI) Pakistan, proudly celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) at the Rose and Jasmine Garden, Islamabad.
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” emphasized the critical role of persons with disabilities in shaping policies and decisions that impact their lives. The event integrated the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), symbolizing a unified approach to advocating for gender equality, disability rights, and inclusive development.
The event featured addresses from esteemed speakers, including Ms. Raisa Adil, Chairperson of the Censor Board, Ministry of Information; Ms. Sofia Yunas, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan; and Ms. Sadaf Abbasi, Convener of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Their remarks underscored the importance of inclusive policies and sustainable practices to empower persons with disabilities.
Ms. Kainat and Mr. Anwar, representing ADDTF and HI respectively, addressed the audience, stating, “On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future, Humanity and Inclusion Pakistan, as the Ageing, Disability, and Diversity Task Force (ADDTF) Secretariat lead, reaffirms its commitment to creating an inclusive spectrum for all. We strive to ensure that persons with disabilities, diversity, and ages are prioritized during humanitarian action, development, and resilience-building. Together, we can build a world that leaves no one behind.”
Ms. Abia Akram, Project Lead, remarked, “STEP made history in Pakistan by forming the country’s first-ever advisory committee of refugees with disabilities. This unprecedented initiative provides a formal platform to a marginalized group that has historically lacked representation in decision-making processes. This committee ensures that the voices of refugees with disabilities are heard, enabling them to influence policies and programs directly.”
The event’s activities included a Pride Walk, symbolizing collective advocacy for inclusion and diversity, followed by a story-sharing session where persons with disabilities and women leaders shared inspiring journeys of resilience and leadership.
Mr. Atif Sheikh, Chief Executive of STEP, commented, “Today’s event is a testament to the incredible leadership and contributions of persons with disabilities. Together, we can build a society that values diversity and champions inclusion.”
Ms. Fumiko, Deputy Representative for UNHCR, praised STEP’s efforts in fostering inclusion, particularly their groundbreaking initiative to establish the first Advisory Committee for Refugees with Disabilities. She acknowledged its critical role in advocating for the rights of refugees with disabilities, ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
The event witnessed significant participation from community members across diverse sectors, reflecting a shared commitment to building a more inclusive society. Participants included representatives from ADDTF, HI Pakistan, and other stakeholders who joined in celebrating the remarkable contributions of persons with disabilities.
