A video clip claiming to show Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of Pakistan’s Supreme Court announcing he would refrain from issuing verdicts against the military or state if appointed Chief Justice is going viral on social media. The 34-second AI-generated clip, shared on October 21 on X (formerly Twitter), features an alleged statement by Shah addressing a social media campaign from the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, claiming he is anti-military and anti-state. Shah purportedly denies these claims, pledging loyalty to his role and the state.
However, fact-checking reveals the video to be fabricated using AI tools and manipulated images. Asad Baig, founder of Media Matters for Democracy, and Shahid Hussain Kamboyo, public relations officer at the Supreme Court, both confirmed the video is fake, pointing to inconsistencies in the visuals and audio.
The picture used for the deepfake was sourced from the official website of the Lahore High Court and can be seen here.
